Dueling Beatitudes

15 02 2011

Perhaps you’ll remember a number of months ago when we posted Joe Abbey-Colborne’s rendition of The Beatitudes of Our Current Church Culture. Those modern day beatitudes sparked some conversation here on the blog, responses out in the blogosphere, a few sermons, and even inspired a side-by-side reading at the First Unitarian Church in Dallas, TX.

This was a great idea, placing Joe’s anti-beatitudes up against Jesus like that. But the performance itself lacked any dramatic tension. It might be interesting also to reverse the order. First the original version of each beatitude from the gospel then, in counterpoint, the contemporary reality of the church in Joe’s beatitudes. And then maybe take the text one more verse and allow Jesus the last word: “You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again.” Let those who have ears, understand.
